Rittenhouse Square Condo
Overview
We created a beautiful and livable urban enclave for this Philadelphia couple to age in place.
They desired an open loft-like floor plan, including views and a continuous path from one end of the large, combined apartment to the other. They were interested in a less formal, comfortable living space. We considered accessibility and ease of use, purposely designing for aging in place, but the work also has a youthful appeal with its modern and minimal aesthetic. They were looking for a change from their formerly historic, heavily decorated, and detailed home.
We designed with an emphasis on gorgeous wood details at doors and baseboards to create simple openings and a continuous language of connected spaces throughout. We tried to bring in warmth to the overall scheme with oak detailing and allow the open space to pull focus to the amazing city views. The overall inspiration was to create a quiet, outwardly focused space highlighting the city views and abundant light.
In this beautiful, pared down space a new sensitivity to simplicity, safety, and lifestyle changes included: flush floor thresholds, extensive pocketing doors, wide openings, flexibility in use of the spaces over time, beautiful wood floors that can exist without rugs, sensitivity to good lighting, less focus on cooking or entertaining and more focus on simplicity.
